UBC Faculty of Science Gender Equity Review
A cross-campus advisory committee and task force has completed a two-year review of the Faculty of Science’s working climate with respect to gender equity and overall recruitment and retention. The faculty is sharing the results to promote the idea that UBC’s teaching and research mission is best advanced by drawing upon the full spectrum of talent.
“Issues of gender equity continue to be problematic at this university and, we know, at peer and other institutions around the world,” said UBC President Professor Stephen Toope.
“The results [of the review] show a gap between what we value and what we do, and I commend the advisory committee, Dean Simon Peacock, Science department heads and faculty who participated with such honesty and integrity. What the report has to say about gender equity and the academic working climate will resonate throughout our community and beyond…. I have been impressed by the its assessments and recommendations, and the changes it has already produced.”
