Naomi Fast, 2010-2011 VP Programs

Posted Oct 5, 2006 by coordinator |  Category:Directors

Naomi is an Assistant Professor in the Botany Department at the University of British Columbia, where she is also a member of the Biodiversity Research Centre and the Centre for Microbial Diversity and Evolution. Her research focuses on cellular evolution, understanding what effects genome reduction has had on the complex cellular machinery of unicellular eukaryotes. In addition to running her research program, Naomi also teaches Advanced Cell Biology at UBC, helping undergraduate students achieve a greater understanding and appreciation of the vast diversity of life at the microbial level. With a PhD in Biochemistry from Dalhousie University and a BSc in Biology from UBC, Naomi grew up in the interior of British Columbia in a small, rural community. It is this background that led to her involvement with SCWIST’s ms infinity program, volunteering as an e-mentor to connect with and encourage young women in rural settings to consider scientific careers. Naomi is also a member of the ms infinity committee.

With two young daughters, Naomi appreciates the rewards and challenges of juggling motherhood and a scientific career. She enjoys spending time outside, hiking and exploring tide pools in the Gulf Islands with her family.
