SCWIST AGM - Tuesday June 29, 2010

The guest speaker will be Dr. Jerilyyn Prior presenting Estrogen Addiction—Hot Flushes, Insulin Resistance and Aging

Speaker bio:

Jerilynn C. Prior BA, MD, FRCPC, ABIM, ABEM is a Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

Dr. Prior is internationally known for her work showing that progesterone increases bone formation by stimulating osteoblasts. More recently, she has shown that estrogen levels, besides being unpredictable, are significantly higher than normal in perimenopause. She has a special interest in menstrual cycles and the effects of hormones on women’s health, especially bone. She has researched the use of progesterone for treatment of menstrual flow problems, hot flushes, and low bone density. As director of the BC Centre of the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMOS) she has studied osteoporosis, fractures and bone density in over 9,000 women and men across Canada for over ten years. Scientific Director of the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research (CeMCOR), she holds the UBC Sharon Stuart Aniridia Grant for research concerning the connection between PCOS/AAE and Aniridia. She has over 220 publications and holds 6 patents. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Distinguished Medical Research Lecturer Award (2002) and was part of the Nobel Peace Prize Group, 1985 International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. Her book, Estrogen’s Storm Season was a finalist in the 2006 Independent Publishers Book Awards for Health. She has a new book “The Estrogen Errors-why progesterone is better for women’s health” recently published by Praeger 2009.

WIEWomen in Engineering (Vancouver Region) in collaboration with SCWIST invites you to a workshop on International Engineering Careers presented by Margaret Malewski.

Are you hoping to work abroad as part of your engineering career?

Do you work as part of an international team of engineers?

If so, this workshop is for you!

For those of you who wish to go abroad, we’ll look briefly at the main ways of getting an international position, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such a career move. We will also look at some of the common work and personal challenges involved in working abroad.

For those of you who wish to work as part of an international team, we will discuss some of the rewards and challenges of doing so.

The session will begin with a short presentation, and then will follow into group activities and questions from the audience.

Margaret Malewski is the author of “GenXpat: The Young Professional’s Guide to Making a Successful Life Abroad”. She has lived, worked and studied in over 10 countries in the past 15 years. Born in Canada, she completed a M. Eng. in Warsaw, Poland and later an MBA at INSEAD in France and Singapore. She is currently CEO of Liquivision Products, Inc, a manufacturer of technical diving computers, based in Burnaby BC.

IWIS Interview Skills Workshop - March 17, 2010

The workshop will include practical exercises so you can practice and get feedback on your interviewing technique. Other topics include where to start and the job finding process, the follow up after the interview and what resources are available to job seekers.

Speaker Bio:

Zoe builds and manages her clients’ wealth by creating customized portfolios which reflect the needs and investment philosophy of each client. She works with another investment advisor to provide comprehensive financial services for their clients. The team prides itself on its strong relationship with its clients resulting from an understanding of their financial needs and a commitment to open communication. Zoe is excited about the potential for increasing personal wealth in a changing world economy. She regularly conducts educational workshops on a variety of financial and economic topics to professionals and business groups.

In addition to her training as an Investment Advisor, Zoe holds a BASc (Mech Eng) and a BEd from the University of British Columbia. In a previous career, she taught physics, science and math in a Vancouver secondary school. One of the most satisfying aspects of her teaching career was to witness the empowerment of girls arising from their contact with female mentors in non-traditional fields of study. She has a passion for encouraging young women to follow their dreams.

Zoe is currently completing the requirements for a Canadian Investment Manager designation. She is a ‘foodie’ who also enjoys an active and healthy lifestyle, which includes playing soccer, tennis and cycling.

Jenny Yang is a startup advisor and reformed venture capitalist. Until September 2008, Jenny was Senior Director at BDC’s Venture Capital group where she led and managed BDC’s investments in young technology companies. Prior to BDC, Jenny was a consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and Bain & Co. where she worked with and provided strategic counsel to executives of Fortune 500 companies. Jenny also has extensive experience in the telecom industry having worked in Nortel’s Wireless Product Marketing group where she helped to grow the wireless infrastructure business in Greater China. Prior to Nortel, she was an engineer with Telus. Jenny is an active supporter of the Canadian technology community and currently serves on the board of the Vancouver Enterprise Forum.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Jamie De Luce presenting The Impostor Syndrome: When Highly Successful People Think They Are Fakes

The Impostor Syndrome can be defined as a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist even in face of information that indicates that the opposite is true. It’s when an A student thinks that she’ll fail the next test even though she’s prepared, or when a manager wonders when she will be demoted from her position, even though all of her reviews are excellent. It is experienced internally as chronic self-doubt, and feelings of intellectual fraudulence. Dr. De Luce will explore the psychological underpinnings of this syndrome and offer suggestions for addressing it.

Dr. Jamie De Luce has worked over 20 years as a psychotherapist in a variety of interdisciplinary work environments (hospitals, hospice programs, palliative care units, oncology, and private practice) dealing primarily with medical issues, grief /loss, trauma, vicarious trauma, personal growth, developmental issues and stress. Dr. De Luce has additional specialized training in EMDR, conflict resolution, critical incident debriefing, dream work and voice therapy. Dr. De Luce is a Registered Social Worker and received her PhD from the University of British Columbia.
